Energy, health and digitalization - as one of the key technologies of the 21st century, nanotechnology can provide pioneering answers to the big questions of our time. At the level of individual atoms and molecules, unusual laws prevail, allowing structures or materials just a few nanometers in size to develop completely new properties. When applied, nanotechnology can enable more powerful energy storage systems, more targeted medical therapies or more efficient data collection and processing.

In the priority research area "Kiel Nano Surface & Interface Science" (KiNSIS), more than 100 scientists from the fields of physics, chemistry, engineering and life sciences are jointly researching structures and processes in the nanocosmos. Since 2013, the interdisciplinary network has been supporting its members to enter into larger interdisciplinary collaborations and to promote outstanding young researchers with excellent framework conditions. A modern infrastructure and national as well as international partnerships from science and industry support the application of current research results.
