«Finding, understanding and putting interesting effects into new applications is what motivates my investigation of nanostructures. Today, we are able to build matter from a few atoms and to analyze that. It is fascinating how nanostructures are universally applicable: On the one hand, a few metallic atoms can form sensitive sensors as nanowires, on the other hand, they can be used in medicine because of their antibacterial effects.»

Rainer Adelung. Professor for Materials Science (Heisenberg Professorship) at Kiel University since 2007. Before that academic assistant at the Institute for Materials Science at CAU. Born in Detmold, Germany. Doctoral degree obtained in 2000 at CAU, habilitation in 2006.
