Kiel Nano, Surface and Interface Science (KiNSIS)

»Being head of the working group „Ocean Surface Chemistry” I develop optical detection technologies, which can be used in marine sciences. With these, we want to analyze physicochemical processes at the interface between ocean and atmosphere. Using state of the art laser methods, we managed to gain detailed insights into the molecular composition and structure of natural organic layers for the first time. These layers often cover the water surface, influence the exchange of gas between atmosphere and ocean and have an indirect impact on the world’s climate.«

Gernot Friedrichs. Born in Celle/Germany. Professor for Ocean Surface Chemistry at Kiel University since 2011. Before Juniorprofessor in the Cluster of Excellence “Future Ocean” at Kiel University. Doctoral degree at the University of Göttingen/Germany in 1999.
