»Many magnetic materials tend to develop small magnetic areas, so called magnetic domains. In those areas, the magnetic data on every computer hard drive is retained. We design materials with special domain structure on a nanometer scale. This way we want to improve the magnetic behavior. How do magnetic properties change in very short intervals, when we excite the material from the outside? This is what we want to know. Here, we are talking about picoseconds. One second has one trillion picoseconds.«

Jeffrey McCord. Born in Nuremberg. Since July 2011 professor for Materials Science (Heisenberg professorship) at Kiel University. Before that head of the “Nanomagnetism” department at Helmholtz Center Dreden-Rossendorf. 1997 PhD at Erlangen-Nuremberg University.
