Exchanging ideas across disciplines: First KiNSIS Young Academy Day July 9

Jul 16, 2021

KYADOn Friday July 9th, 2021, the first KiNSIS Young Academy Day took place at the Audimax at Kiel University. Doctoral researchers from the fields of chemistry, electrical engineering, life science, materials science and physics had the chance to present their research to each other, besides discussing different methods and perspectives. In addition to oral presentations, the 22 participants discussed possible interfaces and synergies by pinning their research topics and methods to a board, visualizing possible connections between them. At the beginning of the event, Huayna Terraschke, Junior Professor for Photoactive Inorganic Nanomaterials, welcomed the participants and introduced KiNSIS as one of four priority research areas of the Kiel University. The chemical engineer represents the interests of young scientists on the KiNSIS board and emphasized the impact of interdisciplinary collaborations by showing examples from her own work group: “Collaborations can give even more input to your science: By working together we have a broad scope of methods and approaches available to us. As young researchers you are doing most of the laboratory work, giving Hörsaalyou your own perspectives and ideas for collaborations – and we are interested in hearing about that.“ The KiNSIS Young Academy Day wanted to provide a platform for discussing them. “I am happy that so many people came here and used the chance for a meet-up in person. We had fruitful discussions and I am looking forward to continuing them. We hope, more participants are allowed for the next events and we can extend our programme with external speakers and workshops“, said Fabio Kraft who is part of the organisation team and is working as a PhD student in the group of Professor Martina Gerken at the Institute of Electrical Engineering and Information.

ConnectingThe KiNSIS Young Academy Day was an in-person kick-off event for a regular exchange and supporting programme. It promotes researchers within the nano and surface sciences in Kiel at an early stage of their career and aims at fostering collaborations across disciplines, institutes and faculties. The activities are created and implemented by doctoral researchers to develop a programme that really meets their personal needs supported by KiNSIS professors and staff. This way, the young scientists are able to find cooperation partners for their own research topic as well as launching new projects together.

The KiNSIS Young Academy is composed by doctoral researchers and master's students, who are interested in doing a doctorate and Post Docs, approximately two years after their doctoral thesis. If you are interested in joining the discussions, participate in the organisation or receiving news by e-mail, just register at the OLAT Group set up by the doctoral researchers: https://lms.uni-kiel.de/url/RepositoryEntry/3972988932
