KiNSIS LogoVaccines are perceived as our most promising exit strategy to the current SARS-CoV2 pandemic. But how do vaccines actually work? And which principles can be utilised for vaccination?
This talk will give a short introduction into common vaccination strategies and introduce a favourable alternative to parenteral vaccines – not only for those who fear needles and syringes. Mucosal vaccination creates an immune response which is tailored to fight an infection being mediated via the respiratory mucosa – such as SARS-CoV2. With this, it might be a strategy to actually prevent infection and to stop virus transmission and spreading.
Nanoparticles play an important role in both, mucosal vaccination strategies and the vaccine approaches we currently use to fight SARS-CoV2. An insight into the technology of mRNA-based vaccines containing lipid nanoparticles is given and further strategies for mucosal vaccination are explored. Own research on the development and preparation of nanoparticulate drug carriers for immune actives show size-dependent cellular uptake and a balanced cellular and humoral immune response. Current projects on nasal and pulmonary delivery of nanoparticle-containing formulations match the strategies currently being explored in the context of second generation Covid19-vaccines.
