»Based on an interdisciplinary approach, I investigate interactions between biological systems and materials. Specifically, my working group deals with mechanisms of cell adhesion on nano structured, (visco)elastic and switchable surfaces, which we investigate with optical microscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM, optical tweezers). Our long term goal is to create artificial materials, which allow us to control the cells’ behavior and to transfer cellular adhesion principles to bioinspired materials.«

Christine Selhuber-Unkel. Since May 2011 professor for Biocompatible Nanomaterials at the Institute for Materials Science at Kiel University. Before (2010-11) junior professor at Kiel University, postdoc (2009-10) at the Institute of Zoology (CAU), postdoc (2007-09, Leopoldina scholarship) at the Niels-Bohr-Institute at Kopenhagen University. In 2006 doctorate in physics at Heidelberg University. ERC Starting Grant (project “CellInspired: Mechanotransduction mediating cell adhesion – towards cell-inspired adaptive materials”) and funding by the German Research Foundation through the Emmy Noether programme (project: “A nanobiophysical approach to elucidate target-cell killing by amoebic parasites”).
