Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY)

Researchers use the large-scale facilities at DESY to explore the microcosm in all its variety – from the interactions of tiny elementary particles and the behaviour of new types of nanomaterials to biomolecular processes that are essential to life. The accelerators and detectors that DESY develops and builds are unique research tools. The facilities generate the world’s most intense X-ray light, accelerate particles to record energies and open completely new windows onto the universe.

European X-Ray Free-Electron Laser Facility GmbH

Logo XFELThe European XFEL is a research facility of superlatives: It generates ultrashort X-ray flashes—27 000 times per second and with a brilliance that is a billion times higher than that of the best conventional X-ray radiation sources. The world's largest X-ray laser is opening up completely new research opportunities for scientists and industrial users from all over the world.The flashes are produced in underground tunnels and allow scientists to map atomic details of viruses, film chemical reactions, and study processes in the interior of planets.

Fraunhofer-Institute for Silicon Technology (ISIT)

Fraunhofer ISIT LogoFraunhofer ISIT in Itzehoe is one of Europe's most modern research facilities for microelectronics and microsystems technology. The heart of the institute are the cleanroom facilities, big enough to operate not only research projects but also to produce the developed microchips in industrial scale. 160 scientists develop at ISIT in close cooperation with industrial partners power electronic components and microsystems, with fine movable structures for sensors (pressure, movement, biochemical analysis, etc.) and actuators (valves, scanners, micromirrors etc.) including the necessary electronics. These miniaturized components are used in medicine, in the environment - and traffic engineering, communication technology, automotive industry and mechanical engineering.

Logo hereonThe  Hereon’s scientific spectrum encompasses high-performance materials, processes and environmentally friendly technologies for mobility and new energy systems. Furthermore, research is conducted on biomaterials for medicine and for increasing the quality of life. From basic understanding to practical applications – the interdisciplinary research center covers a unique spectrum.
As part of an international network and as a member of the Helmholtz Association, the Hereon supports political, economic and societal institutions in shaping the future through the transfer of its expertise. Founded in 1956, the center is the largest non-university research institution in Schleswig-Holstein. In addition to its main location in Geesthacht and its site in Teltow near Berlin, the Hereon has branches in Hamburg, Kiel, Berlin and Garching bei München.

Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology

Research Center Borstel - Leibniz Lung Center

Logo FZ BorstelThe Borstel Research Center is the Lung Research Center of the Leibniz Association. It investigates diseases associated with civilization such as asthma and allergies as well as lung infections, especially tuberculosis (TB). The overriding goal of the basically interdisciplinary and translational research activities is to elucidate the causes and mechanisms of infectious and non-infectious chronic inflammatory diseases of the lung in order to derive new innovative concepts for their prevention, diagnosis and therapy. University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH)

UKSH LogoThe University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH) with its locations in Kiel and Lübeck is one of the largest medical care centers in Europe. It serves to warrant maximum medical care in the northernmost federal state and guarantees medical-technical care at the highest level, especially for patients who require highly differentiated diagnosis and therapy. The unique feature of university medicine is the interaction of health care, research and teaching with the result that scientific findings flow directly into the health system. The UKSH maintains the entire spectrum of medicine and multidisciplinary centers, cares for patients with rare diseases and extreme medical costs, operates university outpatient clinics and provides emergency care. The UKSH is the only maximum provider in Schleswig-Holstein. With 14,000 employees in over 85 clinics and institutes, UKSH is the largest employer and training provider in Schleswig-Holstein.
