About Kiel Nano, Surface and Interface Science (KiNSIS)



Kiel Nano, Surface and Interface Science

is the institutional roof, under which many research groups work together in order to thoroughly understand systems in the nano cosmos. This means the principles of such systems, the investigation of their interactions with their environment and turning knowledge into applications. The scientists involved are experts in these areas.

KiNSIS has, beside researchers from various faculties of Kiel University, particularly the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Agriculture and Nutritional Sciences, members from non-university institutes. Currently, these are the Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education (IPN), the Fraunhofer Institute for Silicon Technology (ISIT) and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht - Centre for Materials and Coastal Research (HZG).

KiNSIS pursues the following fundamental goals:

  • KiNSIS shall be a forum for scientific exchange and foster cooperation in the area of nano and surface science
  • It supports scientists raising third party funds, especially at planning and raising funds for bigger cooperation projects 
  • Technology transfer, among other things by promoting cooperation between KiNSIS members and companies
  • Public relations about nano and surface science 
  • Support and organization of scientific events concerning nano and surface science (presentations, workshops, conferences)
  • Bolstering of young scientists through special courses and awards for final exams and papers
